Directing & Devising Portfolio

I am writing my artist statement in a stolen moment while making breakfast. My baby throws her banana on the ground. I am a theater deviser and educator and mother. She is using her spoon upside down. My teaching and creating is centered in play. The process of making should be playful, which is not to be confused with easy. If we encounter a ball, it is our duty to play with it. It is so with all that we encounter in theater. I am inspired by Ariane Mnouchkine, butoh, Sarah Ruhl’s essays she didn’t have time to write, and Jacques Lecoq. All are invited; my work prioritizes children with learning and developmental disabilities. I am interested in telling stories about the body, our differences, and joy. The process is collaborative; chaos is welcome. My baby has oatmeal in her hair and is throwing it at the dog. The performance should be physical and visually stunning; I am much more interested in a beautiful image that pulls you outward than a thoughtful dialogue that pushes you inward. The performance is accessible in all ways. The audience should be a witness to magic. gfh hh g  yjmhgmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmb                                        nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Babies do not care about artist statements, only the art.

This statement was created in equal part by Clara Kundin, age 30, and Hazel Kundin-MacLeod, age 11 months. November 2020.

I currently make work as an uninvited settler on unceded Lenape land.
